A Special Thanks to Taper Friendly Bands and Tapers

November 2nd, 2007

taper.jpgAs we approach the final concerts of 2007 and look back on the concert year, we, as DMB fans need to give a "thank you" to the tapers who have allowed the fans to enjoy the concerts we have not be able to attend and to enjoy again the concerts we did attend. And, of course, a special "thank you" to our favorite bands who allow the tapers to tape their live concerts and to share their recordings with the rest of us.

Organized taping and trading of live concerts can be traced back to the early '60's and 70's.  The first band to encourage and allow taping was the Grateful Dead. The Dead and other jam bands just loved to play and enjoyed getting their music out to the public.   This next generation of taper friendly bands were jam bands that can be traced back the H.O.R.D.E. and include such bands as Phish and the Blues Traveler. From them, grew a movement known as "taper friendly" bands of which the Dave Matthews Band is a leader and strong promoter.

Taper friendly bands do not allow the "unauthorized" distribution of copyrighted recordings, but allow the free trade of live concerts. Illegal selling of album copies and the selling of live concerts became known as "bootlegs" after the illegal alcohol trade during prohibition.  The first album know to be bootlegged was Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes.

We recently had the privilege of interviewing a taper whose recordings most of us have probably enjoyed and who freely trades his recordings on DreamingTree.

Tim Brown is a middle school band director who has been taping concerts for almost three years.
